Rabbit Ings Country Park

Lund Hill Lane, Royston, S71 4BB

What was once the former site of Monkton Colliery and Royston Drift Mine, is now transformed into Rabbit Ings Country Park, a 157-acre outdoor space. The park features soaring footpaths with panoramic views, alongside woodland and wetland areas that support a wide range of wildlife. This spot is perfect for peaceful walks, wildlife watching and connecting with nature.

Dearne Valley Country Park

Pontefract Road, Barnsley, S71 1HS

Right in the heart of Barnsley, the winding paths at Dearne Valley Country Park open up journeys through woodland and grassland, with riverside wildlife to enjoy along the way. The park’s a great place for a family outing, with picnic benches, a skatepark and play area, as well as space to explore the great outdoors. 

RSPB Old Moor

Old Moor, Old Moor Lane, Wombwell, S73 0YF

The wetland habitats at RSPB Old Moor are home to an abundance of wildlife. This fabulous outdoor spot offers something for all the family to enjoy on a visit, including peaceful walks, wildlife watching and pond-dipping plus an adventure playground for kids. Bring your binoculars on your visit and keep an eye out for some of the star bird species who’ve recently been spotted at the reserve.

Wentworth Castle Gardens

Park Drive, Barnsley, South Yorkshire, S75 3EN

Wentworth Castled Gardens is one of Barnsley’s most precious gems, with over 500 acres of rolling parkland alongside 60 acres of formal gardens there’s plenty to explore. With blooms changing throughout the season, this spot is perfect for the garden lovers! On your visit, head over to the Victorian conservatory to discover plants from all over the world.

Ingbirchworth Reservoir

The walk around Ingbirchworth Reservoir offers a picturesque backdrop for a leisurely stroll, around 1.3 miles. Spend time spotting the frogs in the stream or bring binoculars as there’s lots of birdlife to take a look at. This spot is brilliant for a quiet, idyllic time outdoors that’s off the beaten track. 

Elsecar Park and reservoir

Armroyd Lane, Elsecar, Barnsley, S74 8ES

Nestled in the quaint village of Elsecar, this park is a popular spot for sunny afternoons outdoors. 

Winner of a Green Flag award and recognised as a natural heritage site, Elsecar Park is home to an iconic band stand and iconic views. On your visit, take a stroll around the reservoir, which has been transformed into a flourishing nature reserve with a diverse range of wildlife.

Worsbrough Mill Country Park

Worsbrough Bridge, Barnsley, S70 5LJ

This fabulous outdoor escape is a 240-acre stunning nature reserve and home to a vast array of wildlife and natural habitats. Whether it’s a short stroll or a longer wander, there are plenty of pathways that lead you through meadowlands and wildflowers. On your visit head over to Millers Tea Rooms for a light lunch or coffee and cake – furry friends are welcome
