Prefer to travel by rail or bus? Barnsley has a convenient travel interchange in the heart of the town centre. The interchange connects the train and bus services, making it easy to switch between them.
You can also access the interchange by bike or on foot. The interchange is open from 5 am to midnight on weekdays, and from 6 am to midnight on weekends and bank holidays.
Another way to explore Barnsley is by bike, as the Trans Pennine Trail crosses the borough; providing traffic-free paths for cyclists and walkers. The trail runs from coast to coast, passing through scenic landscapes and historic sites along the way. You can join the trail at various points in Barnsley, such as Elsecar, Wombwell, or Penistone. You can also hire a bike from one of the cycle hubs in the area, or bring your own and use the secure bike lockers at the interchange.

There’s no shortage of green spaces in Barnsley, from parks and nature reserves to reservoirs, woodlands and more.
The Trans Pennine trail is one of the longest walking routes in the UK, running from coast to coast across the North of England and through Barnsley; with access points at Elsecar, Wombwell and Penistone. The Transpennine trail has been designed with walkers in mind, with most of it being relatively flat and comprehensively signed. You can find out more about it here.
The Penistone Line trail covers brilliant landscapes from urban woods to farmlands and canal towpaths and runs from Sheffield to Huddersfield. Between Sheffield and Barnsley, the trail follows the rivers Dearne and Don and can be easily accessed from Barnsley (BNY) station and Wombwell (WOM) station.
