World Tourism Day: local favourites to inspire your next visit!

  • 23/09/25

To celebrate World Tourism Day, we’re shining a spotlight on some of Barnsley’s best-loved spots, picked by the people who know them best, our locals! Whether you're a first-time visitor or rediscovering your hometown, these top picks are sure to inspire your next outing.

Cannon Hall Museum and Gardens and Cannon Hall Farm

Topping the list is this dynamic duo!

The museum and parklands are unique blend of heritage and horticulture. You can explore the beautifully preserved Georgian country house and stroll through the grounds which offer vibrant gardens for peaceful walks.

Next door to the museum, Cannon Hall Farm offers family fun where you can meet a wide variety of animals from meerkats and llamas to pigs, cows and even reptiles! While you’re visiting, definitely pop into the farm shop which offers local produce that you won’t want to miss.

It’s an all rounder for a great day out!

Wentworth Castle Gardens

Over in the quaint village of Stainborough, Wentworth Castle Gardens is the home to 500 acres of outstanding landscape, including formal gardens, parkland, and woodlands.

Visitors can appreciate striking views, heritage architecture, and seasonal displays. The gardens are an ideal spot for both relaxation and discovery, plus the long barn café on site offers the perfect pitstop on your visit.

This spot is ideal for insta-worthy photos and plenty of exploration!

Locke Park

Locke Park is the third attraction that is a must-visit for locals. This welcoming green space is perfect for leisurely walks, family activities, and simply unwinding in nature. The park’s Victorian features, flower beds, and panoramic views from the Locke Park Tower make it a firm favourite for people in Barnsley.

Grab a coffee at the Locke Park Café and enjoy time outdoors! Plus, it’s around a 20-minute walk from the town centre, making it an easy spot to get to.  Find out more about Barnsley South.

These highlights are just the beginning of what our fabulous borough has to offer. Local’s also mentioned plenty of other spots to add to your list when you next visit!

If you’re in search of delicious food and drink, treat yourself to sweet creations at Dolly Desserts, afternoon tea at Twisted Teapot Tea Rooms, vibrant café vibes at Old George, or authentic Italian pizza at Dreaming of Napoli.

For those who love the outdoors, set out for adventure at Worsbrough Mill, a picturesque heritage site with peaceful waterside walks, or explore the wildlife haven of RSPB Old Moor. Active explorers can follow scenic routes along the Trans Pennine Trail or follow the Hudson Taylor Trail, to learn a slice of history as part of the adventure.

Culture enthusiasts will find plenty to inspire at Barnsley Civic, Experience Barnsley, Cooper Gallery, Elsecar Heritage Centre, and Parkway Cinema, where history, art, and entertainment come together to create unforgettable experiences.

No matter your interests, Barnsley’s got so much to choose from that your visit can be as vibrant and varied as you wish!
