OUR FAVOURITE ROUTES IN BARNSLEY
In celebration of the Tour of Britain race, we’ve put the spotlight on two fantastic cycling routes across Barnsley for you to try! These trails are ideal for both casual enthusiasts and serious riders alike; offering stunning scenery and a great workout.
ROUTE 1: THURGOLAND TUNNEL LOOP FROM WORTLEY
Pedal into the Peak District with this unique trail! At 24.1 miles, it takes around 2 hours 30 minutes to complete – but with so many interesting stops along the way, you could make a day of it!
You’ll get started off at Wortley Top Forge on Well Hill Road; a historic former finery forge and ironworks which date back to the 17th century. Head along the Don Valley Trail and pedal beneath the Thurgoland Tunnel. As many riders will know, it makes for some great echoes!
Pass through Penistone Market Town, where you can stop at one of their many bike-friendly cafés for coffee, tea or a light bite to eat. Eventually, you’ll enter the Peak District where epic views await. With miles of traffic-free bike paths and beautiful landscapes, it’s a haven for cyclists and walkers alike.
The Thurgoland Tunnel Loop from Wortley also takes you along Winscar Reservoir, where you can take a short break and enjoy the scenery. It’s just a short distance to Winscar Quarry, which includes some rocky areas to add some adventure to your cycle before heading back.
While this route is suitable for those with varied cycling experience, with a bit of mixed terrain it’s ideal for cyclists at an intermediate level.

ROUTE 2: BARNSLEY TOWN CENTRE TO THE OLD MOOR RSPB RESERVE
This cycling route begins at Barnsley train station, making it convenient for visitors from further afield. At just 5.9 miles it should only take you around 30 minutes, with most of the ride taking place on asphalt (and traffic-free).
Following a short on-road section from the train station, you’ll join a traffic-free path that takes you over the River Dove and forms part of the Trans Pennine Trail. Passing Wombwell Recreation Ground, cyclists can make their way at leisure (or a speedy pace, depending on what you prefer) to the award-winning RSPB Nature Reserve. Home to wetland habitats, it’s the perfect place to take a break and do some wildlife-spotting.
To complete the route, simply head back and retrace your journey back to Barnsley. You can also extend your route by heading on to the Trans Pennine Trail and cycling across other parts of Barnsley.
