Things to do in Barnsley: Phil's top places to visit in Barnsley West
Cannon Hall Museum, Park and Gardens
Bark House Lane, Cawthorne, , Barnsley, S75 4AT
Phil’s first recommendation is Cannon Hall, which he describes as “a fantastic family venue. Great walks, dog-friendly, and the walled garden is something special". With its beautiful country house and sweeping parkland, Cannon Hall is the perfect place for leisurely stroll. While you’re there, don’t forget to step inside to explore the museum’s fascinating displays of local history and beautiful artwork. With an adventure playground and woodland walks, Cannon Hall has something for everyone to enjoy, whatever the weather.
Langsett Reservoir
Langsett Reservoir, Langsett, S36 4GY
Langsett Reservoir is a real gem for anyone who loves the outdoors, and Phil describes this place as his “number one, no question”. Right on the border of Barnsley, and surrounded by rolling hills and ancient woods, it’s a favourite spot for walkers, cyclists and families looking for a peaceful escape. Follow the scenic paths for wonderful views of the water and countryside and keep an eye out for local wildlife along the way. Whether you’re out for a brisk morning walk, a leisurely bike ride, or simply want to relax and enjoy nature, Langsett Reservoir has something for everyone. Don’t forget to bring your camera, the scenery here is truly picturesque.
The Waggon and Horses
A616, Sheffield, S36 4GY
Phil say’s if you’re after a cracking Sunday roast, The Wagon and Horses won't disappoint – it’s a reasonable price with a Yorkshire pudding that’s absolutely spot on. It’s the perfect pitstop after a long morning exploring the fantastic reservoir. Now, some might say it’s not strictly Barnsley as it’s right on the border, but we think it’s a fabulous spot all the same. We love giving a shoutout to some of the neighbouring places you can easily pop over to while visiting Barnsley.
Penistone
High street, Penistone, S36
Penistone is another gem Phil just can’t stop talking about. Picture this: a lively market town, buzzing with energy and packed with friendly faces. If you’re in the mood for great food, good company, and plenty of things to see and do, you’ll be right at home here. Phil’s advice? “Bring yourself over to Penistone if you fancy good views, good people, and a breath of fresh air.” With its welcoming vibe, stunning surroundings and a jam-packed events calendar, Penistone makes it easy to settle in and enjoy yourself. Why not wander down the high street, take in the sights, and see what makes this place so special?
Royd Moor Reservoir
Royd Moor Road, S36 7RD
Royd Moor Reservoir is a real treat for nature lovers, with beautiful oak trees and a colourful wildflowers making it a delight in every season. The circular walk here is a gentle 1.5 miles, just enough to stretch your legs and soak up the peace and quiet. Phil’s top tip? “There’s a cracking viewpoint where you can look right out across to the Peak District, and it’s the perfect spot for a dog walk or just to pause and take it all in.” If you’re heading this way, why not make a day of it and explore nearby Scout Dike and Ingbirchworth reservoirs too? (This beautiful sunset photograph was captured over Scout Dike reservoir!)
