New gallery space opens at DMC with first exhibition showcasing Barnsley artists
- 02/10/26
A new exhibition at Barnsley Digital Media Centre (DMC) this October will showcase work by four local artists following an opportunity to use the temporary studio space in Barnsley town centre.
It has been created through a partnership with Barnsley Council's Culture Development service and the DMC Experience Team and supported by Barnsley Council's Cultural Development Fund programme, Storying Barnsley. The new gallery aims to provide a dedicated space for exhibitions and help more artists in future share their work with the public.
The space will officially open on Friday 2 October with meanwhile…, an exhibition featuring artwork by Ailish Treanor, John Ledger, Kelly Rankin and Mark Evans.
During summer 2026, the artists used a temporary studio in an empty office on Regent Street, with support from Axis. The space gave the artists valuable time to try new ideas, experiment with new materials, make mistakes and develop their work.
The exhibition brings the results of that period together and asks what can happen when artists are given the space and opportunity to create.
Councillor Sam Burdett, Cabinet Spokesperson for Communities, said: “We're delighted to open this new gallery space at Barnsley Digital Media Centre. It provides an exciting new opportunity for local artists to showcase their work and connect with audiences right here in Barnsley.
"The gallery reflects our commitment to supporting the borough's thriving cultural sector. By creating more opportunities for artists to develop and exhibit their work, we are helping to strengthen Barnsley's cultural offer and celebrate the talent that exists across our communities.”
The exhibition will run until 2 November 2026 in DMC 01 and will be open on weekdays from 9am to 4pm. Entry to both the launch event and the exhibition is free.
