This exhibition brings together four Barnsley-based artists: Ailish Treanor, John Ledger, Kelly Rankin and Mark Evans. Through the support from Axis, a UK-based charity who champion and support contemporary artists, they were able to occupy an empty office building on Regent Street, throughout the summer of 2026.
That empty building became a temporary studio or “meanwhile space”, where these artists, diverse in their use of materials and subject matter, were able to play, create, make mistakes, and work things out; culminating in the work now being shown. meanwhile… considers how art is made in moments of time, wherever possible, and in the spaces in between.
Neither the creation of the work featured in meanwhile…, or the exhibition itself, would be possible without the support from Axis and Barnsley Council, both of which we are so very grateful.
Launch: Friday 2 October, 5pm – 8pm, free entry
Opening times: 2 October – 2 November 2026, 9am – 4pm weekdays, free entry
About the Gallery at DMC01:
A new initiative from Barnsley Council’s Culture Development service, funded by the Cultural Development Fund (CDF2) programme, ‘Storying Barnsley’.
Formerly the Games Room, the Culture Development service – in collaboration with the DMC Customer Experience team – have repurposed the space at DMC01 into a pop-up gallery for emerging and mid-career artists and practitioners and organisations.
The goal of this initiative is to pilot a low-cost alternative space in Barnsley for artists and practitioners to exhibit new work and test out ideas. With a brand-new gallery hanging system, easy public access, and with views overlooking the Yorkshire Roses, the space will provide an accessible and visible platform for Barnsley’s creative community to utilise.
