There are four glorious corners to Yorkshire, but one of them, in particular, is pretty overlooked – and that, if you ask me, is South Yorkshire. Now, I am biased as a native hailing from Donny, but I do think that between Leeds, the coastal resorts and the Yorkshire Dales, our rugged but beautiful piece of the pie is the most underrated – with so many amazing things to see and do.

Just one of the multiple towns and cities that make up South Yorkshire‘s undeniable charm? Barnsley. Emerging from the shadow of its soot-laden coal mining history, the town is surrounded by lush rolling hills, filled with talented independent businesses and home to some of Yorkshire’s friendliest folk – and if you ask us, it’s a fantastic recipe for a great day out.

Here are the Best Things to do in Barnsley

1. Learn about Barnsley’s history at Worsbrough Mill

So much more than just a functioning mill, Worsbrough Mill is also home to a country park and nature reserve spanning 240 acres, with so much beauty to take in all year round.

Dating back to approximately 1625, Worsbrough Mill is a working flour mill that has served its local area for hundreds of years, with the help of the River Dove, which the Mill overlooks. There’s so much history to learn about at the free-to-visit museum before exploring the stunning nature reserve, reservoir, and country park.

2. Tuck into delicious European grub at the Med at Olana

A true hidden culinary gem in Barnsley town centre, Med at Olana serves up some of the best Mediterranean food in the entirety of South Yorkshire – with a real warming and intimate feel to the cosy restaurant.

The small but perfectly formed menu changes seasonally, and trust us when we say, this season’s beef shin ragu is winter encapsulated. Everything about this place is dreamy – from the freshly baked focaccia to the wines and, of course, the rich Italian influence that threads through their dishes. Book here.

3. Enjoy swimming and bowling at the Barnsley Metrodome

One of Barnsley’s top spots for family days out, Barnsley Metrodome is home to the famous Calypso Cove – one of the biggest waterparks in the UK. The pirate-themed adventure allows the whole family to swim and enjoy tons of slides and pools, including an amazing wave pool.

Additionally, the Metrodome is home to ten-pin bowling, with an eight-lane alley where families can go head-to-head, arcade games, and more. Games start at just £2.50 (day and time-dependent). Find out more.

4. Stroll the beautiful gardens at Wentworth Castle Gardens

Perhaps one of the most beautiful National Trust sites in Yorkshire, Wentworth Castle Gardens comprises 60 acres, with a stunning stately home, castle ruins and curated gardens to explore.

The Grade-I listed gardens were created in the 18th century, and are still preserved to this day for the public to enjoy. The actual parkland comprises 500 acres, with ancient woodland and more to uncover, however, on the Estate, you’ll find a Victorian conservatory, Stainborough Castle’s ruins, follies, monuments, perfectly pruned gardens and more. Find out more here.

5. Check out local food traders at Barnsley Markets food hall

Hidden above the (fairly) newly refurbished Barnsley Markets, which is also well worth a peruse, the Market Kitchen is the perfect place to explore Barnsley’s street food offering, with classic cafe cuisine, sweet treats, pizzas, Thai food and so much more to try.

There’s a little something for everyone, and thanks to its food hall-style approach, guests can join in one communal space and order from a trader of their choice, meaning no more arguments over where to eat. Find out more.

6. Go shopping at the Glass Works

Part of the complex where Barnsley Markets resides, The Glass Works offers great shopping options, with big names such as Flannels, TK Maxx, Next and more residing.

It’s a central hub for the town, with numerous cafes on offer, too, for a break between shops.

7. Enjoy games and cocktails at The Works

Hidden away above a Gregg’s in the town centre, The Works is a hidden gem games bar, with multiple activities such as VR darts, pool and beer bong on offer.

It’s the perfect place to gather with mates or enjoy an interactive date night, with tons of great cocktails on offer, feel-good music and a crowd-pleasing menu of pizza and burgers if you get a bit peckish. A fantastic alternative place to go on a night out or a date with a different. Book here.
