Why autumn in Barnsley is brilliant for getting outdoors
- 29/09/25
There’s something about autumn that makes you want to pull on your boots, wrap up in a cosy scarf, and head outside, and here in Barnsley, we’re truly spoiled for choice. From wildlife spotting to goat walking, public art trails to bushcraft adventures, there’s no shortage of fun and unique ways to celebrate the season. Read on for some of our favourite ways to enjoy the great outdoors this autumn.
Spot wildlife at RSPB Old Moor
Take a wander around RSPB Old Moor, a peaceful haven where kingfishers dart across the wetlands and little ones can let off steam in the adventure playground. It’s the perfect place to slow down, breathe in the crisp air, and reconnect with nature. While you’re there, hop onto the Trans Pennine Trail to extend your walk, and keep an eye out for Flight Path, a striking new piece of public art that adds a creative twist to your stroll.
Make furry friends at Lower Coates Farm
Looking for something hands-on? Walking the Goats at Lower Coates Farm is packed with animal adventures. From goat walks and alpaca treks to meet-and-greets with chickens, sheep, cows, pigs and more, there’s plenty to keep the whole family entertained. Feed the animals, take part in fun challenges, and enjoy a day full of animal magic.
Embrace new challenges at C-MADE Outdoors
If you like your outdoor fun with a side of action, C-MADE Outdoors is the place to be. Try your hand at archery, bushcraft, and nature-based workshops that offer thrills, new skills, and a chance to enjoy the fresh air surrounded by autumn’s golden glow.
Discover public art around town
Barnsley town centre is home to some fantastic public art, perfect for a relaxed stroll with a takeaway coffee from one of our brilliant independents. Keep an eye out for:
- Crossing (Vertical) – Church Street
- Light Lines – Church Street
- Reverence – The Glass Works Square
- Kes – Library @ The Lightbox
- Alhambra Cat – Alhambra Roundabout
If you're still craving more culture, why not step inside the Cooper Gallery or Experience Barnsley? Both offer inspiring exhibitions that perfectly complement your outdoor adventures.
Celebrate the season with Barnsley Museums
Autumn colour is in full bloom at Cannon Hall’s gardens, perfect for a wander followed by a cuppa at the Pear Tree Café. Over at Worsbrough Mill, enjoy peaceful walks and wildlife spotting, and don’t forget to keep an eye out for some of the murals, sculptures and public art dotted around the country park!
Whether you’re goat-walking, trail-trekking, bush-crafting or art-spotting, autumn in Barnsley is all about heading outdoors and embracing the season.
