No winter visit would be complete without exploring Barnsley’s Christmas Markets, where you’ll find everything from artisan gifts and delicious street food to seasonal treats and unique gifts in a relaxed and fully festive atmosphere. Head over to The Glass Works Square from 29 November to 21 December to get stuck into the festivities! Plus, there’s plenty to do around town to make a full day of it: dive into family bowling, tuck into a festive breakfast, or cocktail hour, anyone? It’s a brilliant spot for a leisurely afternoon, with an array of quirky shops to browse and plenty of cosy places to grab a bite to eat or a festive hot drink. You can also wander the quaint village of Elsecar, taking a walk around the park and admiring the beautiful views. (Imagine Barnsley’s version of the timeless Christmas film, The Holiday – it’s very picturesque!)

One of our favourite parts of the season is cosying up with a warming winter drink, whether that’s a spiced cinnamon latte or a luxurious rich hot chocolate, and indulging in delicious treats like mince pies, which are simply a must! 

Millers Tea Rooms over at Worsbrough Mill and Country Park is a charming and rustic café set in the beautiful surroundings of the park. Enjoy delicious food and drinks alongside the perfect setting for a wintery walk. 

Thyme Bistro, based in Cannon Hall Garden Centre is another hidden gem for festive refreshments. Offering delicious lunches alongside seasonal drinks and home bakes, it’s the perfect spot to unwind. Enjoy a day out, explore the shopping delights of the garden centre, learn about the history of the site at Cannon Hall Museum, and there’s even Cannon Hall Farm for our young visitors!

Christmas shopping in town? Make a well earnt pit stop at Gallagher’s of Barnsley down the Victorian Arcade. Their selection of cakes, bakes and other sweet treats alongside deluxe hot chocolates and artisan coffees are the perfect refuel you’ll need!

If you’re looking for absolute Christmas indulgence, Dolly’s Desserts in The Glass Works will definitely not disappoint! From gooey brownies and decadent yule logs to winter-inspired pancakes that taste like Christmas on a plate, their seasonal menu is bursting with sweet delights. With so many tempting options, we’d recommend arriving hungry as you’ll want to try everything!

Winter welcomes a whole array of wildlife to RSPB Old Moor, where flocks of ducks, geese and even birds of prey make their seasonal appearance. This hidden gem is the perfect spot to slow down, breathe in the crisp air, and reconnect with nature.

It’s also a fantastic destination for families! Little ones can burn off some festive energy in the adventure playground, explore wild play areas, and enjoy ‘The Lookout’, a specially designed hide for curious young explorers.
