Then a tour around the roof restoration project may be the perfect reason to visit Cannon Hall this Christmas!

On Thursday 12th December at 15:00 we will be hosting a tour of the works taking place on the roof at Cannon Hall Museum, funded by the Museums and Estates Development Fund and Barnsley Council.

The tour will be run by a lead member of the project team from Donald Insalls Architects and will take you through the essential repairs to the fabric of the Grade II* listed building, including specialist leadwork, stonework, and replacement to the building’s skylights.

Spaces are limited to 10 people for this tour, so book your place quickly through Art Tickets if you want to visit! We will be hosting more tours in the New Year as the work continues to progress.

The roof tour will involve standing for an extended period so please bear this in mind. Access to view the roof works will be via an external staircase within the scaffold.

The visit is to a live construction site, so please wear sturdy boots.

If you have a hard hat and hi-vis vest do bring those if you can, although Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will also be provided on site.

Further Information

The tour is free but we do ask for a donation where possible to our fundraising charity Barnsley Museums and Heritage Trust (BMHT), to help continue to develop and preserve the Hall and its surroundings.

More information about BMHT can be found here: https://bmht.org/

The museum will be open 11:00-16:00 and we recommend visiting before the tour to experience the Hall’s diverse collection of fine art, glass ware, furniture and festive furnishings. There are a number of businesses on our site, including our two cafes and florists, the Pear Tree Pantry, the Pavilion café, and the Potting Shed Florist. Additionally, you may also want to visit our neighbours at Cannon Hall Garden Centre and Cannon Hall Farm.

Parking is available in the Hall’s lower car park just off Bark House Lane. Please gather at the site compound on the north side of the Hall by the museum’s main entrance. Parking is £1 for two hours, or £5 all day.

The 94 bus runs throughout the day from Barnsley to Cawthorne village, with an approximately 15-minute walk to get to the Hall from Cawthorne required.
