International Women’s Day (IWD) has been around for over a hundred years, as have many of the issues that still impact women’s advancement. Since 1911, IWD belongs to all who care about women’s equality. The theme of IWD 2026 is Accelerate Action for gender equality.

This year we welcome guest speaker Chrissie Yates, a local author on her Penton Trilogy which are loosely based on her hometown of Penistone and her new novel “The Matriarch”. Chrissie will be followed by our second guest speaker Jennifer Rudd with her talk on ‘Pus and Prejudice’. In 1721 Mary Wortley Montagu attempted to introduce the Turkish method of smallpox inoculation into English society. She had to combat prejudice against gender, race and the folklore origins of this life saving technique from the conservative physicians of the day. ‘Pus and Prejudice’ explores the earliest use of ‘Preventative Medicine’ in Britain whilst recognising its origins in the wisdom of the women of the East. Arrive from 12 noon for tea & coffee, with the event to commence at 12:30pm Afternoon Tea Served at 1:30pm
