A guide to the top places to start your day with a delicious breakfast in Barnsley.

From a smoothie on the go to a sit-down brunch with friends, there are so many ways to enjoy breakfast and get your day off to a great start. And there are a whole host of great spots to try across Barnsley, with cafés, coffee shops, restaurants and delis across the borough; whether you’re looking for a delicious vegan meal, a dog-friendly location or a classic Full English to fuel a morning walk. 
 
In celebration of National Breakfast Month, we’ve put together a list of the top places to get breakfast in Barnsley. Read on to find out what they are! 

Barnsley North 

Maggie’s Coffee Shop 

Located in Monk Bretton on Tennyson Road, Maggie’s Coffee Shop is a family-run cafe serving tasty food all day in a friendly setting. While they offer home-cooked daily specials, delicious coffee and cakes, Maggie’s has also become known for their breakfasts, with a menu featuring the classic Full English, healthy options and more.  
 
Maggie’s is just a five-minute drive (or ten-minute walk) from Dearne Valley Country Park, making it the perfect place to get fueled up before exploring the area or meeting up with friends.  
 
Hours: 8am - 2pm daily (except Sundays)

The View Cafe 

For breakfast with spectacular countryside views, there’s no better spot than The View Cafe. Serving Full English breakfasts, sandwiches, eggs on toast and hot drinks from 10am, this licensed café offers cosy indoor seating for the cold months (with a log burner!) and a fantastic outdoor space for warmer weather.  

The View Café is based at Mapplewell Meadows Farm, so whether you’re visiting for a few hours or camping overnight, it’s the perfect place to stop in for a hot meal or coffee.

Alice’s Cafe 

Another Monk Bretton favourite is Alice’s Cafe. Offering classic All-Day breakfasts, an array of sandwiches, omelettes, toast and more, their homemade meals have made this cosy spot a favourite for locals. 

They also offer free delivery within two miles, which is handy if you’re staying in the area and want to enjoy your breakfast from home. 

Hours: 7:30am – 1:15pm, Monday-Friday; 7:30am – 12:15pm Satudays

Barnsley East 

Audrey’s Coffee House 

Audrey’s Coffee House is truly one-of-a-kind. This Alice and Wonderland-themed cafe on Doncaster Rd offers delicious breakfasts, lunch and of course, afternoon tea. Open 7 days a week from 9am - 4pm, they serve traditional English Breakfasts, Eggs Royale, wraps, sandwiches and more all day.

Mrs Hudsons 

A local Wombwell favourite, Mrs Hudson’s is the home of delicious homemade breakfast dishes (and lunch too!) in a cosy atmosphere. It’s a great place to get a meal before exploring Wombwell Woods or heading out to the Trans Pennine Trail - and it’s open six days a week.  

Hours: 9am-3pm, Tuesday-Sunday

Barnsley South 

Locke Park Cafe 

A morning stroll through Locke Park isn’t complete without a bite to eat at their cafe! From breakfast buns and toasted tea cakes to sausage rolls and freshly made scones, Locke Park Cafe has something for everyone.  

It’s dog-friendly, offers veggie and vegan bites and is open seven days a week, rain or shine, with both indoor and outdoor seating available.

The Cottage Kitchen Elsecar 

Based in the heart of Elsecar, you’ll find The Cottage Kitchen. They’ve been serving locally sourced, fresh food for over 15 years, including The Cottage Breakfast (a Full English available in two sizes), breakfast sandwiches, omelettes and toast.  

Open from 8am - 2pm between Mondays and Saturdays, and 9am - 1pm on Sundays, they’re located just a short walk from Elsecar Heritage Centre. Check them out before heading over to explore the area’s history and local indie shops! 

Hours: 8am – 2pm Monday to Saturday; 9:00am – 1pm Sunday 

The Teepot Cafe Elsecar 

Another breakfast spot within walking distance of to Elsecar Heritage Centre is The Teepot Cafe in Elsecar Park. They offer friendly service and a wide selection of affordable breakfast options (alongside other meals), with both indoor and outdoor seating. 

They’re also a dog-friendly cafe, so you can bring your four-legged friend for a walk in the park.

Barnsley West 

Dodworth Deli & Cafe 

Looking for a brunch spot in Barnsley West? Look no further than Dodworth Deli & Cafe. Located on High Street, this popular breakfast and lunch spot offers freshly prepared meals from Monday to Saturday; just a ten-minute walk from Dodworth station.

They’re firm favourites in the area for their Afternoon Tea too, which you can take to enjoy at home thanks to their new Afternoon Tea boxes.  
 
Hours: 8am – 2:30pm Monday to Saturday 

Holme Coffee House 

Holmes Coffee House has been serving up breakfasts in Penistone (and Holmfirth too) since 2019. It’s worth stopping by for their coffee alone, which comes from locally roasted artisan coffee makers Bean Brothers.  

They offer brunch throughout the day, with delicious options like Turkish eggs, American pancakes, wild mushrooms on sourdough bread, Eggs Benedict and much more.

Barnsley Town Centre 

The Old George 

In the heart of Barnsley’s Town Centre on Market Hill, you’ll find the Old George Coffee Shop. Open daily from 9am-4pm, this casual coffee shop offers delicious breakfasts, mains, desserts and of course, coffee.  

We suggest trying their ‘George’ breakfast, which can also be made vegan or vegetarian. Or pick up a breakfast sandwich and fresh orange juice on the go!

Pjs Cafe & Bistro 

Just a four-minute walk from Alhambra Shopping Centre is PJ’s Cafe & Bistro. With indoor and outdoor seating, this has become a meet-up spot for locals and visitors alike, with a range of affordable options to suit different budgets and dietary requirements.

Their cheap and cheerful menu is packed with tasty breakfast items including a classic Full English, omelettes, poached eggs and more.  

Hours: 8am – 4pm, Monday to Saturday; 8am – 3pm on Sundays

Bubble and Squeeze 

Head to the ground floor of The Glass Works for Bubble and Squeeze. Specialising in authentic Bubble Tea and fresh fruit smoothies, they open at 8:30am so you can grab a refreshing drink to start your day off right.  

You can’t go amiss with their Banana Breakfast Smoothie. Or try one of their delicious, iced lattes for a morning caffeine boost!
