Meet the Barnsley artists behind meanwhile… exhibition in new DMC space
- 15/10/26
We spent the day down at the Digital Media Centre and met the talented artists behind the brand new meanwhile… exhibition.
meanwhile… features artwork by Ailish Treanor, John Ledger, Kelly Rankin and Mark Evans.
During summer 2026, the artists used a temporary studio in an empty office on Regent Street, with support from Axis.
This exhibition reflects what can happen when artists are provided with the space to experiment, make mistakes and develop new ideas.
We spoke to the four local artists behind the meanwhile… exhibition on their variations of art and the need for studio space to create.
Kelly Larkin
Kelly Larkin said, "This has been such a great opportunity and I'm so grateful for Axis for finding these spaces, these meanwhile spaces for us to use.
"It's so important. It's just desperately what people in Barnsley or artists in Barnsley really need."
Ailish Treanor
Ailish Treanor said, "Time is just experienced different in the studio for me. It really is a joy to be able to work in a studio and this work wouldn't have been able to be realised without having a studio to work in."
Mark Evans
Mark Evans said, "The work for this exhibition came out of a necessity from my point of view to be able to teach myself to draw again. I couldn't really draw very well as I suffered from a stroke.
"I'm right handed and it affected all of my right hand side, so from being able to hold a pencil, which is increasingly difficult, to be able to make marks and to be able to hold it for any period of time all were quite painful and quite uncomfortable."
John Ledger
John Ledger said, "I think this town especially really needs that kind of space. Let people really expand what they're trying to do.
"It's very difficult to have big ambitions working in a bedroom or in the little side room somewhere with the rest of your life expectations right next to you."
There will be a special exhibition evening taking place on Wednesday 21 November, where artists can connect with the exhibitors and have the chance to talk about the works they're doing.
Opening times: 2 October – 2 November 2026, 9am – 4pm weekdays, free entry
